Woodlock announce national tour

Woodlock announce national tour

Following their sold-out national tour in June, Melbourne’s favourite boys from Woodlock are packing up and hitting the road again in September and October.

17 shows, 6 states and 3 regional festivals will welcome the indie-rock threesome. The five week tour celebrates the release of their new single The Garden, which represents a shift in sound for the band. Addison Lynch from Hillydilly Music described the track as a “celestial masterpiece”, saying “Woodlock excels at transforming elemental components of a rock band into a work of art with little aid from the digital world.”

The Garden is the second single from their recently released EP Labour of Love, which debuted in the overall ARIA charts top 100 and also in the ARIA top 50 digital downloads chart. The release also sat comfortably, for over 3 weeks, in the iTunes Singer/songwriter charts.

Woodlock are being supported on THE GARDEN TOUR by Fieu (pronounced fee-yu), Brisbane’s six piece alternate pop collective headed by powerhouse songstress Emily Brewis. Think London Grammar or Portishead with ultra-sizzling lyricist.

Brothers Eze and Zech Walters and Bowen Purcell, who are Woodlock, do things differently. They built the love around their music through busking. Many of their over 17,500 facebook followers enjoyed their street shows and have supported them since. The band have no label, no investors and no radio airplay as yet.

“We are blessed, we seem to have a very loyal fan base” said Eze Walters. They are not just numbers on our facebook, they are people who enjoy our music and are willing to make the effort to come and see us. It’s something we really appreciate”.

THE GARDEN TOUR takes the band to Western Australia and Tasmania for the first time.

Fire Pit Fathers’ Day at Byron at Byron

Fire Pit Fathers’ Day at Byron at Byron

One of the Northern Rivers’ most celebrated musicians will play for the annual Fathers’ Day lunch celebration at The Byron at Byron Resort and Spa.

Cheynne Murphy’s raw talent has won him a strong national audience. Rhythms Magazine said of his music “A big, warm, sprawling folk-rock… unpretentiously earnest”. We gained him here on the Northern Rivers in 2008, where he debuted his first solo EP at BluesFest.

After discovering three chords and the truth in his final year at university, Cheynne dropped the security blanket of his corporate marketing career and was rewarded with

a global publishing deal with Warner Chappell/Alberts. He has received multiple music industry awards and has supported the likes of The Church, Richard Clapton, Christine Anu and The Choir Boys.

Cheynne’s honesty is total. Of his new album  “A Horse Called Freedom” he said “The album draws a lot of inspiration with my own struggles managing a blended family with four kids. Even though we are not wearing painted tribal colours we are still modern day warriors. We’re grappling with technology, with money. It’s less physically demanding but more psychologically demanding. I have a lot of empathy with other fathers. It’s challenging being a parent and I’ve found that music is therapy for me. It’s been a constant companion and song-writing is a balm for my soul”.

Come get some therapy with Cheynne as well as smashing options from the fire pit and spit on Fathers’ Day at The Byron at Byron. The lunch includes a large selection of salads, vegetarian options and desserts.

Sunday 7th September, from 12:30pm. $79 includes mains, desserts and a complimentary glass of beer or wine on arrival. Children may dine from the childrens’ menu.

Bookings are essential on 66392105 or reservations@thebyronatbyron.com.au

Woodlock do it their way

Woodlock do it their way

A national tour that initially sold out weeks in advance on a marketing budget of $150, 3 new shows added and only 2 shows with tickets remaining, #39 on the digital ARIA charts and no radio airplay. Ever. Oh, and no label.

These are just some of the queer facts about Woodlock, a folk-pop-rock act from Melbourne playing a sold out national tour right now.

The Melbourne based band are brothers Eze and Zech Walters and Bowen Purcell. They built the love around their music through busking in Bourke Street Mall, where they developed their fan base, many of whom are now among their over 15,000 facebook followers.

Their first EP “Lemons” has sold over 15,000 copies on the streets since April last year. It has now been followed by “Labour of Love”, showcasing the maturity and development in their sound.

The polished and revived Woodlock sound comes with the help of ARIA award-winning producer Wayne Connolly (Josh Pyke, Boy Bear and The Paper Kites) who took the trio from Melbourne under his wing for two weeks of intensive recording at Alberts Studio’s in Neutral Bay, Sydney.

“I think people like our music because we have an enthusiastic drummer, he’s really smiley” joked Eze Walters of percussionist Bowen Purcell. “Zac and I have been writing and playing music together since we were little. We were home schooled and mum was really creative in the way she taught us. She would write songs for us to learn things, like the seasons and the countries. She would dress us up and we’d do plays. We got put in school for the last two years because I was fighting with mum. We tried to do music but failed. We were good at playing but not so much the theory”.

“Two years ago we quit our jobs, bought a caravan for $200 and did it up so it was legal. We thought we’d travel around Australia, busk and pick fruit. The fruit picking was hard and our busking went off. I guess that’s when we committed to our music full time”.

Byron musos serenade mums

Byron musos serenade mums

Two of the region’s finest musicians will play at The Byron at Byron Resort and Spa at the annual Mothers’ Day celebration.

The union of vocals, guitar and violin from Mark Heazlett and Bella McKenzie is hailed as “dynamic yet sensitive”, with a repertoire spanning Vivaldi to Van Morrison, INXS to Coldplay, Django Reinhardt and The Corrs.

“Our mothers bring us into the world and love and nurture us” said Mark Heazlett. “It is an honour to serenade them”.

Mark grew from country music roots in Tamworth, winning the NCEIA Dolphin Award for best instrumental on guitar and the World Heart Music Festival Song Competition.

His partner in music Bella McKenzie received her Bachelor of Music from the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA) and for the past twenty years has been playing the violin professionally in orchestras and string ensembles nationally. She toured with Angus and Julia Stone on their recent national tour and has played at the last two Splendour in the Grass music and arts festivals.

“What we create with our music is a beautiful atmosphere” said Mark Heazlett. “We just love to entertain and we want to make Mothers’ Day a beautiful experience for everybody at The Byron at Byron”.

Sunday 11th May, from midday.
Two courses, live music and a glass of sparkling wine for $85 per person. Children twelve years and under may dine from the childrens’ menu. All mothers receive a rose to take home as a Mothers’ Day memento.

Stay the night on Sunday May 11 for only $195 when you mention “Mothers’ Day Special”.
Bookings are essential on 6639 2111 or restaurant@thebyronatbyron.com.au
